Blog6: Project Plan and Timeline

Image
Blog6:Project Plan and Timeline In a virtual software development project, it is crucial to have a project plan and timeline. This is a project called "Music Technology and Bellringing". Project Objectives The objective of this project is to develop a system using Max that would allow users to play bells via MIDI controllers. This includes the creation of a customisable bell synthesiser, the conversion of bells to MIDI notes, and the implementation of real-time control over multiple parameters. This project addresses a unique area of performance technology, with few existing systems currently available to accomplish such a task. Scope of the project 1. develop a customisable bell synthesiser 2. conversion of bell compositions to MIDI notes 3. real-time parameter control Image1 & 2: These two imagines show the example of bell synthesiser. Steps: 1. Estimate the time: Estimate the time required to complete each task based on workloads. 2. Develop timeline: Timeline tasks an

Blog5: MIDI Interface

Blog5: MIDI Interface Tuoye Ma In the big world of making digital music, there's a super important thing called MIDI. It's like the secret sauce that makes everything work together, even if you don't see it. Besides, its interface is one of the most important constituent parts. What's MIDI interface? MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a protocol that allows communication between electronic musical instruments, computers and other devices. It allows musical performance data, such as note sequences, control signals, and timing information, to be transmitted between different devices. A MIDI interface is a hardware device or built-in component in an electronic musical instrument or computer that makes connection and communication between MIDI-compatible devices easier. Typically, it has MIDI inputs and outputs that can be used to connect musical instruments which are compatible with MIDI, controllers, synthesisers, computers, and other devices. Image1: This ima

Blog4: MIDI Control

Image
Blog4: MIDI Control Tuoye Ma In music making, there's a fantastic thing called MIDI control that helps musicians make all sorts of sounds. It's like a secret weapon behind the scenes, letting you be super precise with your music. What's MIDI Control? MIDI is a fancy way of saying Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It's like a language that lets different music stuff talk to each other. Instead of sound waves, it sends messages like "start playing this note" or "change the volume." MIDI control is like adding special knobs and buttons to your music setup. You can twist knobs or slide sliders to change how your music sounds. It's like having superpowers for making music. Image1: This is a MIDI controller which is similar with that I will use in my following project. What Can You Do with It? You can use MIDI control to do lots of cool stuff: 1. Playing Music: You can make your music feel more alive by changing how hard you hit keys or pads. It

Blog3: Bell Synthesiser

Image
Blog3: Bell Synthesiser Tuoye Ma In music tech, new things keep coming up, giving musicians fresh ways to make sounds. One cool thing getting attention is the Bell Synthesiser. It mixes classic bell sounds with modern digital tricks, making all sorts of cool noises. What's the Bell Synthesiser? It's like a digital bell machine. Instead of metal vibrating, it uses computer smarts to make bell sounds. You can adjust slightly and play with the sounds in lots of ways. Image1: This is a picture about the model of bell. Image2: This is a typical synthesiser How Does It Work? Making bell sounds on a computer means copying how real bells sound. This includes stuff like the tone, how long the sound lasts, and where it feels like it's coming from. Smart computer tricks make it sound just like real bells. What Can You Do with It? You can make all kinds of bell sounds with it. Big church bells, jingly sleigh bells, or mystical Tibetan singing bowls. You've got control over things l

Blog2: Change Ringing

Blog2:  Change Ringing Tuoye Ma   In the heart of many churches and bell towers with long histories lies an old tradition that mixes mathematics, teamwork, and music into a charming symphony of sound - Change Ringing. This complicated art form often involves the rhythmic ringing of bells in complex sequences, creating a serious of harmonious tones that resonate through the air.   Video1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjMVmrgdeps&t=1s It is a brief video of change ringing in York Minster. The Origins:   Change Ringing was created in England, dating back to the 17th century. Historically, church bells were rung in a simple r manner, often for religious or civic occasions. However, change ringing created a new dimension, where the order of the bells' ringing changes continuously according to a pattern in advance.   The Mechanics:   At the core of change ringing lies a set of principles that command the order in which the bells are rung. Unlike traditional bell ringing, where the

Blog1: General Introduction (project proposal and blog outline)

Blog1 : Gener al Introduction (project proposal and blog outline)   Tuoye Ma   Title : Music Technology and Bellringing   Aims:   The project's goal is to make a system using Max that lets people play bell compositions with a MIDI controller. We're creating a special bell sound maker that you can customise, turning bell music into notes that a computer can understand, and letting you change how it sounds while you play. This project is all about making a new kind of music system that hasn't been done much before. Objectives (with choices and decisions):   1:Literature Review: The stuff people have written about bell ringing and MIDI (that's the technology used for controlling electronic instruments) helps us understand these topics better. Some talk about why bell ringing is important in English culture and how it's done, which helps us appreciate its history and traditions. A most public of musical performances: the English art of change-ringing The Art and Scienc
